Phone Systems for Education

Phone Systems for Education made better by OIS…

What is VoIP?

Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) is technology that allows users to make telephone calls over a network. The network could be your internal computer network or, more usually, the Internet. VoIP utilises an existing network connection to make free or very cheap phone calls. Calls that are transmitted over the Internet are considerably cheaper than calls made via a standard telephone system because there is no need for the telephone company to install a dedicated telephone network. Instead a true VoIP solution takes advantage of the Internet.

If you make a large number of calls within the UK, make international calls, have more than one office or call other people with VoIP enabled phones, then substantial cost savings can be made by using VoIP, typically up to 75%! A true VoIP service requires a good broadband connection, including good upload speeds. You will require VoIP telephone handsets, which can be desk mounted, handheld or even software based. It is also advisable to have a backup service in place for failover of the telephone system. This can be an alternate telephone line or even a mobile phone. Is VoIP suitable for me?

My broadband is slow…

True VoIP telephone systems do require good broadband, if you have a slow broadband connection why not see if Oakford can help improve this for you using our bonded broadband solutions (See Broadband Connectivity). If improving your broadband is not possible you can still use VoIP technology to help your school, however you will need ISDN channels installed for external calls with VoIP operating internally.

Can I keep my current number?

Yes. Your existing telephone number(s) can be ported across from your current provider. New VoIP telephone numbers can also be registered with both national and local dial codes available.

We have multiple school sites…

Perfect! VoIP is an ideal solution. As the solution is based over the Internet we can easily setup a telephone system across multiple sites or even to worldwide partner schools in record time. Equally if you have staff who sometimes work from home, we can pre-configure a VoIP telephone for you to plug into your home broadband to add an extra extension to your telephone system.
